r151 is strongest. Can be hard to locate and expensive. Longer than a L43

W56 is more common and still longer than your original.

Yep the W56 is an easy swap and much stronger. It's also a 5 speed. Your L43 is a 4 sp. The W56 will be longer so you will need a custom crossmember and driveshafts.

Plenty of G54's out there too as well.
It also fits a older 79-83 mini truck better since it has a forward shift t-case. and it lines right up with the old holes.
That's a option as well I swapped one into mine.
Here's the thread on it:

That looks good 82, I think I'm gonna go that route too on my first gen. And if I am lucky enough to win the crossmember I could maybe scratch up enough cash to buy an adapter and finally have duals.

Its a little more work, and a little more expensive, but the W56 is a really strong tranny they really take a lot of abuse. I have been swappen them into all my trucks.

Try the W56. I have one behind my 4.3L for six(6) years now with no problems. D/D and primary trail rig.

COOL...LIKE I SAID NEW TO TOYOTA AND BEEN RUNNING THE TRUCK FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND LEAVES ALOT TO BE DESIRED-POWER WISE.... :(

VERY INTERESTED IN THE 4.3 SWAP  .....SO I ASSUME AN ADAPTER FOR THE BELLHOUSING OF THE W56 IS WHATS NEEDED

ALSO ANY IDEA ON BALLPARK MONEY FOR THE 4.3 SWAP? MOTOR/HARNESS/ECU/RAIDIATOR/ADAPTERS/DRIVELINES...OR IF U CAN DIRECT ME TO A THREAD WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED

True but if you add up all the adapters and engine mounts and stuff you need to drop a 4.3l in and mount it to a toyota transmission you are looking at more money then to drop a toyota supra 5mge or 7mge in or a 2.7l taco motor in your truck.
Also all you need for the toyota motor swaps is the bellhousings from those motors transmissions and most of them bolt right up to the w56.
Hell for the 5mge swap the engine mounts bolt right up to the 22re mounts and for the 7mge all you need is the 5mge engine mounts to put it in.
The only exception to this is the 2.7l taco motor which you have to make up custom motor mounts.

Anyways my thoughts on it.
There are a couple threads about these 7mge and 2.l taco motor swaps on www.marlincrawler.com and www.pirate4x4.com
The 5mge swap is on http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/supra/

W56 is a good swap while going to dual cases, that way one only builds custom drive shafts once.

The total package is something like 4+6.5 inches longer overall.

When the L52 died in my Sept 82 (83) short bed, went with the W56 and dual cases.
