Quick Question for you...what specs are these assembled 3rds set up to?
Pinion Shim - ???
Carrier Shirm - ???
Backlash - ???
Carrier Bearing Pre-Load - ???
Also who sets up the gears up there? I'm going to be in the market for some gears/lockers soon to replace the 5.71's (going to 5.29's) and i'm trying to get some research done.
Thanks
Jack

I would also like to know the strength diffirences between the V6 and 4cyl gear sets. Are the V6 gears just a little larger?
I believe IFS would be 7.5" most common Toyota are for 8" housings, some rear housings for Tacomas have 8.4" I believe the V6 housings are a little larger to allow for e-locker. i'm still researching this though, so don't quote me.

all ifs front and most 2wd are 7.5" 27 spline axles (i want to say ifs fronts are reverse cut also not sure )
2wd with 4 speed trans, v6, and or 1 ton are 8 inch 30 spline
all 4wd rears are 8" in the p/u 30 spline. all 79-85 front (sfa) are 8" 30 spline and identical to the rear.
the e locker can be used in a 4 cyl housing you have to modify both 4cy and 6 cyl housing for the e locker. e lockers are in 2000 (may start in 2002) taco's and in some four runners that i think started in 97 but dont quote me on the e locker i used to have a bookmark that said for sure, too lazy to search for the link, i think it was 4 crawler though.

v6 thirds oviously came from v6 trucks. they have bigger bearings and a bigger pinion gear than the 4cyl

The V6/Turbo Housings are thicker and have larger ribs to better hold the ring and pinion gears. Some people in the know have said that the V6 units are 30% stronger then the 4Cyl units. I don't have actual test number to back that up but I can tell you that after failing 4cyl diff many years ago I personally stopped using the 4cyl units and I have much better luck with V6 units in the rear and High Pinion units in the front.
The V6/Turbo units are a drop in replacement for the 4cyl units.
