The 3rd member comes from a FJ 80, some say it is the strongest gear for our application, it certainly gives you a better pinion angle. It a reverse cut gear so it is stronger, but they seem to be a little more breakable in reverse though. All and all it is worth the extra money just for the pinion angle, being a little stronger is just a bonus. Wish I could afford one. My stuff is all just spare parts.

I can pick up an fj40 high pinion for a good price will it be able to handle 38" tires. How much less angle is it, im only running 3" of lift

FJ40's use a larger low pinion 3rd member. It will not fit in a pickup front axle. The FJ80 front high pinion units will fit. They do well with 38" tires but you may want to consider changing the gear ratio to 5.29 and adding a locker to it before you run it.
