My name is Grayson....I have an 88 zuk and I am in the process of collecting all the needed parts to do this toyota minitruck axle swap... I got a line on some toy axles for $200 for the complete set here in Tallahassee FL. I plan on doing the Jeep YJ leaf spring conversion also.... Anyone do this swap? I am looking for some advice and do's and dont's. What will be the pain in the ass part...What lockers do you all recommend? I already have 5.14:1 t-case gears, so I am thinking the 4.10s may be good enough. I am wanting to run for sure at least 33s, maybe step up to 35s.

my brother's soft top runs 6.5's with stock 4.30 gears, and welded carriers in his toy axles with 35" mtr's. it used to be a slug up the hills till the 1.6 8v motor was dropped in. he runs stock sammi rears all the way around.
I think everybody does either rear springs in front, or the yj spring conversion.

on my tin top I am starting next week, I am running built toy axles with 4.88 gears. I have the 6.5 gears for the t-case and am going to run toy rear all the way around with a shackle reversal in front, and toyota hi steer. the front is packed with longs and has a welded third. the rear is welded with the 58" wide from a ifs truck and disk brakes. and will be running my 37" x terrains on 17" wheels carried on from my last yota.
my motor swap will have to come later. I will run either a 8v or 16v 1.6L. It is trail only so doesn't matter which to me.

I already have the 1.6 8 valve engine...I for sure want to run 35s now. So I am thinking either 4.88 or 5.29 r&p. Probably do LockRights front a rear for lockers. My biggest concern right now is my driveshafts. These Rat Adapters I see.....are they designed so you can mate zuk driveshafts to toy 3rds or are they designed so you cam run toy driveshafts to zuk t-case?????? I will be running toy histeer kit...Question with that is, will I be able to run the toy histeer with the Tracker 1.6 power steering box?

I have no idea. we had a replacement toyota c/v setup for the front of a 79-83 toyota. we had the rear flange machined and redrilled to make them work together. the front is stock sammi on one end, and stock 84+ on the axle end with a square tube d-line. I was planning on doing square tubes front and rear on mine, but I may leave it street legal in case the green sticker program goes weird.
to do the tracker power steering box, use the factory sidekick/tracker pitman and send it to someone like marlin to have the pitman reamed to fit the fj80 end. i am not sure if t/g has the reamer. you can look on ebay for the tapered reamer for about 80 bucks. it is a 10:1 taper I think it was. the small side is aproximatley 9/16" and large around 5/8" for a 1" thick piece of steel.

I wonder how it would work to cut the arm and sleeve the tierod end that fits the tracker pitman arm?

I did this with a sidekick draglink, and it is tubed into a toyota tie rod and to a home made crossover arm I made.

btw it is better to have the pitman reamed than to add an insert which is 1.25" in diameter to the pitman. and if you have the pitman reamed you can prder a custom length draglink for i think 80 bucks with ends.

Well, my axles are built. I am now just waiting on some extra money to put them under my zuk now. Trying to figure out the best way to do it also..I have some YJ leaf springs to use, but I want to stretch my wheelbase since I am running 35s...Also wondering if my Tracker power steering will be strong enough to push the 35s in the rocks...oh and the driveshaft issue.

the sidekick p/s will run 35" tires on toy axles in the rocks perfect, even if you are locked in the front. my brother has the same setup. the front driveshaft you will have to cut and modify the trans crossmember if you lift it too far. and run a square tube. the rear, get a c/v front off a yota and contact rockrat from pirate. for 45 bucks he will sell you the adapter to go from sami flange to toyota d-shaft so you will be good for the road.
my brother uses a spicer c/v with toyota to spicer c/v adapter, that is ground out a little and redrilled to sami pattern, then the sami flange was taken to have the center hole turned out to fit the toyota flange. he didin't need the adapter. I have it on my sami now and it works perfect with no vibes up too 70mph. but my motor didn't last for 70mph for more than 40 minutes before blowing up.

I am running the 6.4:1 in the case and ran the 4.10's open for a couple runs and it was not bad, but when I welded up the diffs I went to 5.29's and man I actually have a Highrange back again, it is great.

OK,,,I now have another budget of $3000 to spend on my zuk to hopefully finish it up...

Toy axles are completely built with 4.88 Yukons and Lockright lockers front and rear. I still need to cut and move spring perches. I have the YJ leaf springs already too..From what I am hearing from others and on here, my Tracker power steering will work just fine to push 35" tires in the rocks. I am not a fabricator, so I am going to try and go with bolt on kits to do this swap. Which complete kit is the best in your opinion? How much will a bolt on YJ to Toyota axle for zuk kit extend your wheelbase? I know I need to stretch wheelbase, but I dont know how much I need to be stable and able to climb steep obstacles..

OK,,,,looks like I am going totally custom now...Will be 3 linking the rear with trac bar, 3 linking the front with panhard bar, coil springs, custom fabbed steering, Tracker power steering, 1.6 EFI engine, 97" wheelbase, 35" tires. Should be pretty damn sweet once I am done with it. :rockon2:

I like your build, but it seems like your rig dosn' have a lot of flex, and also your tires seem way over inflated for that terrain. Nice buid though
