Well I finally have a rig capable of getting myself into places that will require a winch to get me out of so I broke down and bought an XD9000i. I have been a part of lots of recoveries but never really paid a lot of attention to the gear we were using. I'm looking for a decent recovery kit. Warn sells the nice ones like this http://www.amazon.com/Warn-62858-Medium-Winching-Accessory/dp/B000BQRT9I/ref=sr_1_2/002-6897592-0679261?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1173389294&sr=1-2 but they seem kinda pricey. I already have straps and shackles and I'm pretty sure I can come up with gloves and a way to hold the crap. I was thinking of just getting a snatch block and a tree saver. What kinds of other things have you found useful in winching where rocks are far more abundant than trees which is all new to me.

Don't go without another person with a rig. I rarely do. somebody else always comes down the trail willing to help. unless you are on mt. hood.

chains are good the military uses them the best thing is lots of rope and set up pully systems. like your rig, gear reduction is the key
