Hello anyone,
I have an 87 samurai and I put 31 inch tires on and now my gear ratio is terrible. Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to lower the gear ratio just a little? I am not going rock crawling just hunting.
Thanks,
Tom

due transfer case gears that would probbly be the best way in your case.

Put smaller tires on that would be the easiest way... the more practical way would be to regear your diffs to a higher ratio. T-case gears will do the same thing but it's only lower in 4wd not out on the road.

What gear ratio would be best? I don't want to crawl just lower the ratio. Are there any other transfer cases say off of a sidekick that I could swap gears or transfer cases that would lower it?

just buy the gears for the diffs. only way to do it. it probably has 3.73's, 4.10 's or 4.11's put 4.56's or maybe a little lower.

I have 4.10's w/ 33'' tires it goes but could def. do better, im going to 4.88's here soon, pretty sure 4.10's would work great w/ 31'' tires.

when you do the sammy t-case gears it lowers the high range by 20% also, they are not like toy gears.

i put the 6.5 in my t-case and i'm running 30" tires!!! i can do about 70 in 5th gear.... and yes it actually has power in 5th gear!! low range is a little low but i'm only running 30's!! plus you have 5 gears to choose from in low range... if its to slow up shift!

LOL I never get tired of seeing toyota guys posting about samurai gearing needs... they are totally different animals. Do the 4:1 gears in your sami and you'll be fine for on road and easy to moderate trails. run 6.5:1 if you want to crawl really slow. just make sure you also get a mighty kong for your t-case

they've had these for years. Good performance once you get the t-case mounting strong enough
