i have a 88 samurai with spoa lift with home made drop shakles and 31 1250 15 boggers on it. Good lil rig but i live 8 miles from town, and another 15-30from any good trails. i wld like somethen i can get up to speed better and maybe pull lil trailer. i know the suzuki sidekick and the chev/geo tracker motors will fit the easiest and good for a novice/experince mechanic(Me). wat year would i be lookn for for both these vehicles for the motor?. How much wiring difference is in the 1.6 8v to the the 1.6 16 valve? how much power difference? i am planning on getting transfer case gears but not diff gears just rear locker. I have been reading peeps use sidekick powersteering or tracker steering. wld i just be better of just buy a tracker sidekick and just strip it out ? any in put wld really help. i wanna take it out more but im limited cuz of the speed and the distance. :driving:

try to find a newer track kick 96 and up just so you can use a diagnosis tester, i run a 94 side kick 16 valve love the power but had to spend 250 to have trail tough build the harness, with 31 inch tires either engine would move you along pretty well i ran 31's with my 16 valve and could burn the tires, i move 35" tires now with 6.5:1 t case and 3.73 axle gears and an automatic tranny, either engine will have the power steer just buy the bracket from lowrangeoffroad.com im told that you can put your sami head on the 8 valve with your carb and make no wiring mods but the reason is to get a wollop of hp out of it and the fuel injection makes most the diffrence. try asking on www.zukiworld.com those guys are experts:bow:

ok well thank u very much for the input. How long did it take them to build a harness? was the harness just plug and play ? do u kno wat has to be re wired ? wen i do find a swap from a 94 and up do i use the engine harness out the donor vehicle for the samurai along with the ecu ? My friend jonny has picked up a like a 89 or 90 side kick 2 door and the motor looks the same as mine except it says fuel injection. would this be the right motor im looken for? is there any were that shows on how to make these harness? thanks again any advice will really help

you could use the older one (throttle body witch is just an electric carb)and put your sammi head on it and you would be done, but the power comes with the fuel injection, brent had my harness for 2 weeks sometimes he is swamped it just depends, after seeing it i think i could do it myself, but im not sure, i heard a guy went to the library and read books on suzuki wiring and done his own but it took him a while to do it i guess it just depends on your money verses time ratio at that time i had the cash and was swamped at work but know i could sit on the couch and figure it out:( the harness is plug and play takes 5 min to install everything is labled very clean and easy. you will need the harness from the doner ecu and everything hooking to the engine it will be driver side ecu on the doner and pass side when you put it in your sami. ive had alot of friends use the 8 valve (throttle body) and now i have one in one of my 2 door tracks, its way gutless compared to my 16 valve engines and will not run on steep angles like the multi efi does

so any 94 and up track kick is wat im looking for ? so if im going to swap it out mite as well get 1.6 16 valve right? Do u kno any one that is saling a 1.6 16 valve? sidekicks are hard to find around here let alone the engine?? I just wanna be able to cruise me gorrilla zukie to the dunes and those good wheein places. How much should a good motor end up setting me back ?

yeah they can be hard to find, ive found them from free to 500 bucks it depends its easier to find a wrecked tracker or sidekick, trackers have the 16 valves from 92 and up, 4 door sidekicks pretty well all have 16 valves stay away from the sidekick sports they have a 1.8 and there are very little upgrades/options, ive got a buddy in st george who might have one for sale where are you located shipping may cost you as much as the engine:(
but i can definatly ask him.
Im just getting ready to add a tracker t case between my automatic sidekick trans and my samurai t case it will take me from a 58:1 crawl ratio to a 182:1 and im currantly running 35" tires with no problems:p

cool thats much appricated i thank u very much. So the 89 or wat ever sidekick sittin at my house is prtty much just taken up space? Or will it become usefull in the future? are these sidekick motors pretty bullet proof? as far as reliablity, can they take alot of rpms and hi revs? or is it more torque? wats the stock torque and horsepower one puts out compare to the stock sammi motor?
thanks again
Matt

they are a bit better the 8 valve ones have real good torque and the 16 valve ones have real good hp i can run my 16 at 6000 7000 rpms all day, with the gears low enough ive had alot of buddies run the 8 valve engines and love the luggy torque, sidekicks are goldmines, i belive the 89's had 5.89 axle gears if its 5 speed the autos had 5.12's and you can swap them into a sami (maybe its just the rear one? another question for the zukiworld gurus) if its 5 speed sell the trans if its auto swap it into your sami best mod ive ever done, keep the t case mated to it and run your sami case behind that for a 182:1 crawl ratio, the power steering is good to sell or keep, i use a sidekick steering wheel too for comfort, i use a sidekick telescoping antanna on my sami to keep it out of the way when wheelin, the seats are a hot item, if it has ac you can build a compressor for your rig, and of course the coil springs wich i want from you if you part it out:call:

Hold on.
5 speeds are the 5.12:1 and autos are 5.89:1

Some one said you have to change the head to run the 8 valve:no: you can bolt the sami intake and exhaust to the 8 valve with no wiring mods at all. The 1.6 head does not have a fuel pump though so you have to use an electric in-line.

Pics of where you mounted your kick antanna would be great

Also I just parted out a tracker and have all 4 coils taking up space in my garage. I'm in WA so the shipping is on your dime.

soryy too late im running 3" lifted tj coils, lemme see if i can find a pic....

URRG! all my pics show the passenger side, i just cut an oval shape hole as high up as poss in the "A" pillar filled the stock hole up with bubble gum, and slid the whole thing in ran some screws into the window frame and hooked the cable to the radio
