View Full Version : Full Hydro and front 4Link
Chris Geiger

Last year Chris Dunbar installed a front 3link + panhard on the front of his truck. Due to the position of the steering box it was hard to move the axle forward with that design. So he hit the books and designed his own full hydro ram from scratch and then proceeded to install a four link front end with the axle moved further forward. Both the hydro ram and the 4link front end are now undergoing testing and evaluation as production products.

Looks good Chris.
How many degrees in are the uppers?
How does it feel during your urban wheeling test?
Nice job on the ram. What are the specs.

Thanks,
The uppers are 10 degrees per side with 7-8" of vertical separation.
I need to add more oil to the front shocks before it is street worthy.
right now it is set up really soft so it leans more than I like.
The ram is 6" double ended 1.25" shaft, 2.25" bore.
I am running a 4.2 GPM steering motor with the TG pump.
I am going to run Swamp Lake this weekend so I will have a trip report next week.

I've been running your pump since they came out with my full hydro. And I haven't had a trouble with it. I had to replace the one I ran engine oil, brake fluid and I think 90w in because it started making noise after that. Not sure why http://rockbrawlers.com/images/smiles/icon_scratch.gif?

Nice , but why the ram is off center ??

Nice , but why the ram is off center ??
The ram mounts would hit the axle housing at the diff and the upper link bracket on the driver side. I wanted it centered but it got pretty cramped for space.
Not on a three link but here is how I mounted my full-hydro ram on a Toyota axle.

One of the things I like about how Dunbar mounted his ram is that he put the hoses behind the ram. This could help prevent damage to them.

Looks like a nice set-up. Would be interesting on fitting with the 1UZ Lexus V8. Might have some customers interested in it when it comes available.

We are still testing the front 4-link to make sure it is going to be OK but so far so good. I have not had to make any changes yet. The full hydro steering is also working well.

To run this 4 link you will need Full hydro i suppose? Im sure bump steer will overtake mechanical steering.

After much consideration and debate the 4 link project has shifted to a 3 link with panhard project. You can see detailed photos here...
http://www.trail-gear.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=6545
Fitting the 4 link setup on 86-95 style frames (keeping the brackets up high) would require extensive custom exhaust work possibly including a header. A 3 link + panhard configuration would make using the stock steering much easier.
We figure most people that want to link the front will want to get away from the limits of the steering box and drag link. It is possible to use a steering box with the 3 link set up, but due to the position of the panhard bar the steering box would need to be a reverse cut FJ60 style box.
At the same time we are developing the 3 link system we are also developing a full hydro kit that will be super easy to install. The bracket will weld right on to the Toyota housing and ram will bolt right up to the bracket. These will be priced right too!
