This might be a crazy question, but I had a thought about something and would like to share with a forgiving group.

Has anyone ever given any thought of maybe trying to put a solid toyota axle w/ manual locking hubs in the rear? My thinking is that it would be nice to run a spool in the rear (cheaper) and have the ability to disengauge the spool by mearly turning the hubs to the free position when it is not needed.

One problem I am seeing is trying to get the hubs installed on a rear solid axle and have them in a stationary position.....unlike the front axle where it is able to turn.

Am I thinking crazy or has this ever been done? Also if it has been done how hard would it be?

just put a front axle in the rear my idea was to use a set of 44,s driver drop front for the rear and a pass drop for the front (for a sami) and just attach the drag ling to a fixed bracket keeping it locked straight, then one day when i could afford doing a rear steer

One thing to keep in mind is the rotation of the gears. You wont be able to just put the housing back there and bolt it up. You need to change the rotation of the gears.

Guess you've never seen a full floater. The problem is if you disengage both hubs to get rid of your spool your not going to be able to move your truck either unless your running around in front wheel drive. Some good reading http://www.off-roadweb.com/tech/0112or_semi_floating_and_full_floating_axles/index.html
