Default How do you like to camp?

So how do you like to camp? Can be in general or specifically for when youre wheeling, I'm just curious and trying to decide what way I want to go with camping supplies.

Normally I have an air mattress in the back of the runner but now I’ve found a truck canopy tent that I may adapt to work on the runner. I would gain about 2 more feet and be able to keep some things inside at night. All I would have to do then is make some window screens for the driver/pass doors and I would be all set.

I like to roll out the sleeping bag in the bed of the truck but if there is too much crap back there then I'll sleep under it. Tents are nice but sometimes they are more hassle then they are worth.

Tents suck, i just throw a tarp over the side of the bed rails and use a tent pole to extend it up so it doesn't sag. ( and the doo doesnt drain into the truck bed. )

On a Cot in a tent like this:

Thats just for winter camping though. Wood stove heated cabin wall tents. In the winter we've had it about 20deg outside and fired up the stoves full blast and had 100 deg inside! Nice to be on a cot so you're off the cold ground. plus it makes extra space since you can put your bag, boots, etc under your bed.

(and yes, thats a hot tub under the blue tarp in the 3rd & 4th pics)

In the summer just a regular tent & a foamy or air mattress is good.

Me, I like my home built teardrop trailer. This is a picture of it out on the salt falts during speed week this summer. Small enough to pull almost anywhere. The sleeping area is big enough for a full sized mattress, has a radio/cd player and room for my laptop for watching movies on. The rear has a hatch that opens up for a small galley and cooler storage. I sleep better in there than my own bed at home.

pic no worky of your teardrop.
I prefer my small tent w/ a couple sleeping bags to lay on. If it's really cold I'll sleep in the extra cab of my tow rig. On nights it got down to 0 I'll let the deisel rattle all night and run the heat.

it really depends on what kind of trip it is ... for the most part if wheeling its in my tent in sleeping bags although the wife bought us a air matress and i'm just gonna keep telling her i hate it so i can sound like a man haha
however i do have a seasonal site and a campgound and stay in my 5th wheel motor home all summer near the beach ( really not camping but i have campfires every night with beer and listen to the waves crash.

I used to carry enough to keep me and a few friends comfortable, along with plenty of gear and spare parts. but that will have to change now, because I am going from a short bed toyota truck, to a sammi hard top with a full interior including back seat. I will have to decide how to pack if I have passengers, and how to pack when there is just me, or me and my g/f. There is no way I am going to fit my 2 kids, my g/f and her 3 kids and me.
I can pack heavy though, because I trailer it with my burban, and can decide to camp near the tow rig.

There will be another rig in the group soon that can pack some of the extra stuff

Of course we as a group can lighten the load on each others rigs through careful planning and selection of "group use" items. No sense in everyone bringing a stove or super large tent, etc.

That Trail-Gear Body Bag is looking real handy now that this conversation came up.

My wife and I got a Columbia queen size sleeping bag, good down to weather cold enough to freeze the water outside the tent! Need a tent up here in Canada, the mosquitoes would drain you dry! Hmmmm, freezing cold and vampire mosquitoes... we go camping every other week from May til Sept. I guess it's the benefits of camping, the 20 lb Walleyes and Northern Pikes, the Northern Lights, yeah I wish it wasn't 20 below tonight!

I used to just sleep in a bag under the truck/stars. Now we usually have an air mattress in the back on the truck. We haven't been camping since the second boy cam along though so we are on the verge of needing a big ass tent.

When the boys get older they can sleep under the truck. We get the back.

Another one for a tent and air matress. I have two different sized air mattresses for whether or not the missus goes. I camp ALOT in the summer so I've got a pretty good set up. Have it down to a science pretty much. When I was living in Europe I slept in the back of my 4-Runner for two weeks and showered at camp grounds while I toured Wales and Ireland. Normally I have too much junk in the back of it though to do that.. speaker box, recovery gear, tools... ect

If I am out with my kids, Tent and Air Mattresses.

If it is me alone, it used to be Air mattress in the back of the tow rig but now it is Army Cot and new Army Sleeping Bag system with Bivy Sack under the stars.

Default Umm, a long-winded rant on what I do . . .

If I'm with my wife and 5 kids, we use a huge 12-man, 2-room Coleman tent with an air mattress which is on a built-in cot. If I am alone (say, for hunting, for example) I use a tent-cot from Cabelas. It keeps me dry when it rains and snows (which it has done many times in the past).

Also, when it's really cold, it's nice to throw some big river rocks in the fire. Then, when it's time to hit the hay, put those river rocks under the tent-cot and it keeps warm for a while. You can also put the rocks in your sleeping bag as long as you don't let them get too hot. Your best bet there is to place the rocks in a big, heavy-duty cotton sack and then put the sack in the sleeping bag.

If I am packing into the back-country on horseback, I would lay the saddle pads and blankets underneath my sleeping bag for extra cushion instead of the air mattress. In this case, I'd use the lightest tent I had. A bivy works best but the tent-cot is another choice. In this situation, you've got to think of the load you place on the horse/mule and how long your trip will be.

Anyways, camping is my forté. I go as often as possible. I've got all kinds of cool tips for those who might be interested. For example, everyone knows that starting a fire is easy if you use dried pine-needles, but did you know that you can use those large, square egg-cartons that are made out of that pulp material? It takes a bit of heat to get it burning good but once it does, it won't go out even with a surprising amount of wind, and it burns long enough to easily start kindling. Also, they are very light weight if you are hiking in.

Here's another interesting one I learned from my dad while hunting: If it starts to rain while you're camping and your feet/boots get wet, it's a pretty miserable thing, especially if you've hiked miles to get to your site and going back is not an option. We take bacon when camping for obvious reasons, but one not-so-obvious reason is that, under the above circumstances, we can coat our boots with the bacon grease and it helps to keep them water-proof.

I could go on forever, but I don't want to bore you all . . .

Yeah it's the ole sleeping bag on the ground or sometimes in a tent if it's cold or wet out. The majority of my camping is on the Fordyce or Rubicon so with a bobbed bed and no trailer this works fine. I tend to have a few man sodas by the campfire at night to help ease the discomforts of the rough terrain beneath me

I used to sleep in the bed of my truck untill i bobbed so short a midget would be cramped back there. Now i have a big ol tent 10x10x6'tall, and an air mattress.. Its nice to be able to stand straight up in yer tent.
